How the Conversion Rate Calculator Works

This calculator measures conversion rate by comparing the number of conversions to the total number of users or clicks. It expresses this relationship as a percentage.

The calculator uses:
Users or clicks – the total number of users or interactions
Conversions – the number of completed actions
It then calculates how many conversions occur per user or click.

For example: If you have 1,000 clicks and 50 conversions: 50 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = a conversion rate of 5%

What Is Conversion Rate?

Conversion rate shows how effectively traffic is converting into desired actions. A higher conversion rate generally indicates stronger performance, as more users are completing the intended goal.

Conversion rate is commonly used to measure:
Website performance
Marketing campaign effectiveness
Landing page optimisation
Lead generation and sales activity
Example 1

Website Conversion Rate: Steve is tracking how many people send a message using the quote form on his website to get a plastering quote. Using his Google Analytics data, he looks at the last 30 days, how many users have visited his website and enters that number in the “Users/Clicks” section of the calculator, 3560, then he enters the number of quote form submissions into the “Conversions” section of the calculator, 167. The calculator then tells him his current conversion rate is 4.69%.

Example 2

Ecommerce Add To Basket to Purchase Rate: Katie wants to understand more about how her online shop is performing. By using her analytics data, she can add the number of users that add products to their shopping basket, 900 (in the users/visitors field) and then the amount of purchases, 110 (in the conversions field) to see that her add to baskt to purchase rate is 12.22%.

In both of the above examples, Steve and Katie can monitor performance over time and if there are any increases or decreases can act accordingly.

What Is A Good Conversion Rate?

This is a very common question and as is the case with many similar queries, the answer is not a simple one.

Conversion rates can vary widely depending on a myriad of factors including but not limited to your industry, target audience, type of conversion, price etc.

The main things to consider for your individual website/campaigns will be how are your conversion rates performing over time. If you consistently are around the 4%-6% range but suddenly see that rate drop to 2%, this could indicate either an issue on your website or an issue with your traffic. Alternatively, if you see increases, understanding why could help you maintain or build on those increases in the future.

So what would be more relevant to you is not “What’s a good conversion rate” it’s more about analysing your website or campaigns performance over time. You could build a spreadsheet for example and using the above calculator, build a view of your monthly performance over the past two years. Then you can see if there are seasonal trends, peaks, drops and patterns. Notice a drop in performance after changing to a cheaper hosting provider? A slower website could be the reason, see a drop over Christmas? Seasonality could be impacting your business etc.

How To Improve Your Conversion Rate

Depending on your type of business/website, there are numerous ways you can improve your conversion rate to get better value results. Below are just a few to get started.
Website Speed: A slow loading website will inevitably lose potential customers, use a tool like Google’s Page Speed Insights Analyzer
Website UX: UX stands for user experience. If it’s difficult to find thew quote form on your website, naturally fewer people will fill it in. Make sure contact forms, phone numers etc are prominent and easy to find.
Traffic Quality: If you’re using Google, Facebook etc to run campaigns, make sure you’re targeting the right audiences.
